Bankroll Management: The Boring Skill That Keeps You at the Table

March 2025 ยท 5 min read

You can memorize basic strategy front to back, find the best table on the floor, and still go broke in 45 minutes. How? By betting without a structure. Bankroll management isn't exciting โ€” but it's what separates players who have long sessions from players who hit the ATM twice before dinner.

The Unit System

The simplest framework is unit-based betting. Decide your session bankroll, then divide it into units. A conservative approach uses 1% of your bankroll as one unit. If you sit down with $500, your unit is $5. You bet 1โ€“2 units per hand under normal conditions.

This approach means you can absorb normal variance โ€” a 10-hand cold streak โ€” without going bust. Variance in blackjack is real and significant even with perfect play. You will lose stretches. The question is whether you have the stack to weather them.

Session Limits

Set a stop-loss before you sit down. Many experienced players use 40% of their session buy-in as the floor โ€” if you're down $200 from a $500 buy-in, you leave. No exceptions. Tilt is expensive.

Equally important: set a win goal. Walking away up 30โ€“50% from a session feels like leaving money on the table, but it locks in a real win. The longer you play, the more variance converges toward the house edge. Time is the casino's ally.

The Real Edge

Bankroll discipline isn't about being timid. It's about survivability. A player who can make 500 decisions per session at correct strategy will, over time, perform better than one who plays recklessly for 80 hands and reloads twice. Volume played correctly is how you express any edge you have.

Put this into practice โ€” drill the exact basic-strategy chart against every dealer upcard.
