The Goal of the Game
You're not trying to get as close to 21 as possible, and you're not trying to beat the other players. Your only goal is to beat the dealer's hand without going over 21. You win if your total is higher than the dealer's, or if the dealer busts (goes over 21). Go over 21 yourself and you "bust" and lose instantly — that's the house's built-in edge.
Card Values
Number cards (2–10) are worth their face value. Face cards (Jack, Queen, King) are each worth 10. Aces are worth 1 or 11 — whichever helps your hand more. A hand with an ace counted as 11 is called a "soft" hand, because it can't bust on the next card.
How a Hand Plays Out
You place a bet. The dealer gives everyone two cards (usually face up) and takes two for themselves — one up, one down (the "hole card"). If your first two cards total 21 (an ace plus a 10-value card), that's a "blackjack" or "natural," and it usually pays 3:2. Otherwise, play moves around the table and each player decides what to do with their hand.
Your Options
Hit: take another card. Stand: keep your total and end your turn. Double down: double your bet and take exactly one more card. Split: if your two cards match, separate them into two hands with a second bet. Surrender: where offered, give up half your bet and end the hand. Knowing which option to pick in each situation is what basic strategy tells you.
What the Dealer Does
The dealer has no choices — they follow a fixed rule: hit until reaching 17, then stand. At some tables the dealer hits "soft 17" (a 17 made with an ace), which slightly increases the house edge. After all players act, the dealer reveals the hole card and plays out their hand. Anyone still standing with a higher total than the dealer wins even money.
