Doubling down is the most profitable move in blackjack when you use it correctly — and a fast way to lose money when you don't. This guide covers exactly when to double down in blackjack, and when to keep your bet where it is.
What Doubling Down Means
When you double down, you double your original bet and receive exactly one more card — then your turn ends. You're trading flexibility (no more hits) for a bigger payout on a hand where the odds favor you. Because you only want to do this when you're likely to win, timing is everything.
The Core Doubling Hands
Hard 11: double against almost any dealer upcard. Eleven is the best doubling total — a single 10-value card gives you 21.
Hard 10: double against a dealer 2 through 9. If the dealer shows a 10 or Ace, just hit.
Hard 9: double against a dealer 3 through 6 — the dealer's weakest cards. Otherwise hit.
Soft Doubling
You can also double "soft" hands (those with an ace). Double soft 13–18 (A-2 through A-7) against a weak dealer upcard — generally 4, 5 or 6, widening for the stronger soft hands. These doubles feel counterintuitive because you might already have a decent total, but against a dealer likely to bust, putting more money out is correct.
When NOT to Double
Don't double hard 12 or higher — the bust risk is too high. Don't double when the dealer shows a strong card and your total is mediocre. And remember: doubling is only available on your first two cards, so you can't double after hitting.
Double After Split (DAS)
Some tables let you double after splitting a pair, which is a player-friendly rule worth seeking out — it makes several borderline hands more profitable. When you find a 3:2 table that also offers DAS, you're playing some of the best blackjack conditions available.
Make It Automatic
The doubling spots are few enough to memorize, but recognizing them instantly under pressure takes practice. Drill them in the trainer's Hard Totals and Soft Totals modes until you spot every double on sight.
